When you use Open Author to create an educational resource, you can import materials that you previously created in Microsoft Word and saved in Microsoft OneDrive. OneDrive is a free web-based application in which documents can be stored.

We recommend importing from OneDrive Import instead of adding a link from OneDrive to your Word document in Open Author for a few reasons:

  • When the content is in Open Author, you can easily share resources you've built in Word in a remixable format, with the added value of the Open Author’s powerful version tracking.
  • You can share Word documents without worrying about sharing them from OneDrive to individuals.

In cases where you expect your OneDrive document to change over time, it may be less maintenance on your part to link to the Word document in OneDrive, so you only have to update the document in one place (OneDrive). In this case, you'll need to make your Word document open to all who have the sharing link.

Note: You must have a Windows account to import documents from OneDrive.

Import your Word Document

After you have started building a resource in Open Author, you can import a Word document from OneDrive.

  1. If you already have content in your resource you would like to keep, scroll to the bottom of the Open Author page and select Insert New Section. If you import a Word document into a section that you are already working on, the import will overwrite your content in that section, and you will not be able to use the Undo button to revert this change.
  2. Select Import OneDrive Word Document at the bottom of the editing window.
  3. Select Allow button to allow the platform to retrieve documents from your OneDrive account. Open Author cannot access all of your documents—you specify only the documents that you allow to import.
  4. In OneDrive, find the document you would like to import and select the document.
  5. In OneDrive, select Open to import the document.

When your Word document content is imported into the Open Author text field, you can edit in Open Author. When you are satisfied with your imported document, the next step is to describe and publish your resource.

It is recommended that you save and preview the resource once you have imported your document. Some formatting options are not supported and you may want to change the formatting for the best presentation in Open Author.

If your document does not import, or some formatting is incorrect after you import, you can try to copy and paste into the editing window. In certain cases this may be a better option to transfer content to Open Author.

Note: Only importing Word Documents is supported at this time. Excel, PowerPoint, etc. are not supported.
